Daniel James Papa:
New York, l’isolamento invernale ricorda “The Shining”. Laddove il film di Kubrick riportava in vita l’orrore dell’Overlook Hotel, The Castle Inn si erge a monumento vivente dell’età dell’oro di Delaware Water Gap.
Lewis & Clarke's Lou Rogai hails from Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. He speaks fondly of his quaint town that is steeped in rich musical history. He mentions, half-joking, that although the town is an hour from New York City, the winter isolation is not unlike The Shining. Where Kubrick's film brought to life the terror of the Overlook Hotel, The Castle Inn stands as a living monument to the golden age of the Delaware Water Gap.
Walking the grounds, it is easy to dream up the scene from 100 years ago: crowds of vacationers stepping off the train, looking up, awed and enveloped by the mountains and fresh air, wandering towards an ornate complex of buildings decorated with tile and mosaic. The casino lights beckoning with the sounds of vaudeville shows inside. Trolleys and horses crowd the streets as excited children make plans to go bathing in the river. Just up the hill, they point to where Teddy Roosevelt once had a room at the Water Gap House.
Today, the village of Delaware Water Gap is a quiet enclave at the edge of a national forest. Almost all of the hotels were burned or demolished many years ago. It is easy to find the stone foundations in the woods, along with shards of painted ceramic, bricks, glass and coat hooks. The ghosts of a once glorious past seem to inhabit the landscape, along with a strong geological energy emanating from the quartzite conglomerate cliffs that flank the Delaware River.
By 1952, the vacation rushes were long over. Big-Band leader Fred Waring acquired the Castle Inn, and used it as the base for his famous singing group, The Pennsylvanians. Here, he also ran the Shawnee Press which published sheet music.

The wild natural beauty is the reason people live here now. The change from the lushness of summer to skeletal trails of winter. The way one feels dwarfed by the landscape, yet somehow it allows itself to be known intimately. The magnetism of this strange little town is undeniable.
It is this multilayered history that led Lewis & Clarke to record with Sternecker in the Castle Inn, in an attempt to channel the energies of the place; to invoke the ghosts. Rogai lives nearby and told of how he was once handcuffed by police while on a midnight recording mission in the building's vacant music hall. The allure of the reverberating room was too enticing to wait for formal permission from the previous owners, and local police mistook him for a vagrant inhabitant.
As the filmmaker recording the session, I documented a group of musicians who were locked into a spacious groove. There is evident chemistry between Rogai and his core group members Ian O'Hara, Shane O'Hara, and Anthony Lavdanski. They leave room for experimentation, each player immersed in his own world, occasionally looking up in communication. Breaking from the trance, they laugh and banter between songs. This is a band that loves the details of sound, the subterranean textures that not every listener will hear. It is rich and twisting music, often building up into walls that are swiftly pulled down. On this day, the spirits in residence seemed to have some influence on the players. Perhaps like Jack in the photograph at the Overlook Hotel, they have always been the caretakers here.
